Description

Composer and pianist Stanley Cowell is known for his imaginative and intellectual approach to jazz. Cowell studied classical music at Oberlin and the University of Michigan, but he says it was hearing the great Art Tatum play when he was 6 years old that marked him for life. In the late 1960s and early ’70s he was part of the Max Roach Quintet; he’s also played with jazz luminaries such as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Abbey Lincoln, and Charles Mingus. On April 4, 2013, the Stanley Cowell Trio played at the University Club at Rutgers University/Newark as part of the Paul Robeson Galleries’ “Evening of Music and Art” series.
