The Princeton Symphony Orchestra loves to tackle big artistic themes and cross-pollinate with other artists, scholars, museums and arts organizations. This weekend (October 5-6) the PSO performs composer Derek Bermel’s Migration Series Jazz Concerto with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra. The concerto was inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s iconic series of paintings about early 20th Century black migration from the South to the North. The performances are part of a variety of lectures, museum visits, classes, and concerts throughout Princeton, which the organizing groups are calling the Migration Series Project.
State of the Arts is taping a rehearsal, concert, and interviews at the PSO’s October 5th concert. Derek Bermel, a recent composer-in-residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, will play clarinet in the concert.
