Composer and jazz trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe sees it as his mission to create dramatic musical works that explore and celebrate the African American experience. In 2002, his “God, Mississippi and Man Called Evers” had its first performance with the New Jersey Symphony and the Westminster Choir. The work tells about the life and murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers in 1963. Hannibal spoke to State of the Arts about his creation and about the profound impact Medgar Evers’ non-violent response to injustice had in his own life.
