State of the Arts featured this profile of composer Dave Brubeck in 1989. Brubeck (1920-2012) had just written music for a “mass” at Rutgers University. “To Hope! A Celebration” — a contemporary arrangement of the Roman Catholic Mass — was a composition that Brubeck approached “as prayer.” Producer Anisa Mehdi caught the performance and talked to the jazz master at his home.
