Description

Feminist playwright Kate Hamill makes radical adaptations of classic literature for the stage. Her setting of The Scarlet Letter links Nathaniel’s Hawthorne’s morality tale in a Puritan New England town with contemporary themes. Six actors and a puppet bring the story to life. The play debuted at Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey in March 2024. Eric Schultz produced and directed this profile for State of the Arts. Joe Conlon was the director of photography, Michael Boylan provided performance footage, and Nemuna Ceesay narrates.
