Description

Miss Witherspoon by playwright Christopher Durang (1949-2024) premiered in 2005 at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey, with Kristine Nielsen in the starring role. The play was commissioned by the McCarter, then under the direction of Emily Mann, who also directed its first production. Miss Witherspoon is darkly humorous, following the multiple reincarnations of the title character. In addition to clips from the play, State of the Arts speaks to playwright Christopher Durang and director Emily Mann. The play was one of three finalists for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but no award was given that year.
