At a studio in Manhattan, a witch and her army of monsters are dancing with a lion and a little girl named Lucy. Years ago, choreographer Randy James asked his eight-year-old god-daughter for an idea for a story to tell through dance. Her recommendation: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis’s classic story, set in World War Two-era England, about four siblings who are evacuated to a house in the country… only to discover a mysterious wardrobe that is a door to another world full of mythical creatures and characters – and also consumed with a clash between light and dark – Aslan the Lion, and the evil White Witch. It’s the first in a series of epic tales set in the land of Narnia.
Since it was first published in 1950, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been adapted and interpreted in many ways – radio, television, dramatic productions for the stage, and a few blockbuster movies. But never as a dance. Randy James originally produced The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1998. Now, he has created a fully re-worked version – which required him to enlist beyond the ranks of his all-male company 10 Hairy Legs. Monica Gonzalez, who is performing the lead role of Lucy, saw the original production long before she knew she would have a career in dance.
