Description

Athol Fugard, the South African playwright whose work exposed the psychological damage of apartheid, died on March 8, 2025. In his memory, we revisit this 1989 story from the State of the Arts archives. Producer Amber Edwards met up with the playwright in New York, where he was in rehearsals for his powerful drama, My Children! My Africa! Set against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa, the play explores themes of hope and education. It would still be five years until apartheid was officially abolished, in 1994. Athol Fugard’s work remains a poignant reflection on the fight for equality, making this production as relevant today as it was then.
