This year’s New York Emmy nominations have been announced, and State of the Arts has received four nods! We’re grateful for the recognition from our peers, and for the rich arts scene in New Jersey that we’re privileged to cover. Here are the nominations:
“I’m always telling some sort of a story—it’s a story of a community, or a town, or a personal client.”
– J. Kenneth Leap
In Arts/Entertainment (long form content), our full episode featuring J. Kenneth Leap’s stained glass public art, the premiere of Jewel Box at NJ Ballet, and Bony Ramirez at the Newark Museum of Art has been nominated! Stream the full show here on NJ PBS. Photo courtesy J. Kenneth Leap
“I always look to use my art to uplift people.”
– Lawrence Ciarallo
Nominated in Diversity/Equity/Inclusion (short form content), producer Jessica Dotson’s story on muralist and painter Lawrence Ciarallo features the artist’s reflections on how Jersey City’s rapid changes are impacting the artists who call it home. Lawrence shares how his murals and mixed media collages, rich with political themes, are shaped by the community he navigates daily, and how he hopes to uplift that community in return as he opens his studio for JCAST, the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour. Stream the feature here.
“Making art is a way for the world to understand me.”
– Ricky Boscarino
Producer Sam Vladimirsky’s story Electric Garden: Ricky Boscarino’s Luna Parc, is nominated in Arts/Entertainment (short form content). When artist Ricky Boscarino bought a dilapidated hunting lodge in the forests of Sussex County, he could not have anticipated the journey he and the house would undergo. Thirty-six years later, the house is known as Luna Parc, a whimsical 5,000 sq. foot museum, atelier, and private residence resembling something out of the mind of PeeWee Herman or Tim Burton. “As you understand the history, it’s almost like you’re going in to rescue something.”
– Phil Buehler on documenting Ellis Island
And finally, producer Susan Wallner’s story Return to Ellis Island is nominated in the category Nostalgia (short or long form content). As teenagers in 1974, Phil Buehler and Steve Siegel rowed a boat from Jersey City to Ellis Island, then in ruins and closed to the public. They made a film that has now been restored and published as part of the New York Times “Op Doc Encores” series. In our story, Phil and Steve reflect on their riveting adventure and the powerful symbolism of the island. Stream the feature here. | Photo of Steve Siegel by Phil Buehler
