Description
Steven R. Carty is a second-generation basket weaver from Mount Holly, New Jersey, on the edge of the Pine Barrens. He’s known for using wild materials, including invasive plants, as materials for his baskets. State of the Arts goes on location with Steven to Whitesbog Historic Village as he gathers wisteria vine, an invasive plant that is threatening native holly forests. We also visit a workshop at Peters Valley School of Craft as Steven guides students in the subtle techniques needed to create baskets and bark containers out of natural materials without the use of power tools.
