Description
Charles Ward (1900-1962) was a Trenton native who worked in a Trenton factory before becoming an artist, studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1935 he made history by painting what is believed to be the first New Deal post office mural in the country. State of the Arts visited the old Trenton Post Office, now a federal courthouse, in October 2007, when an exhibition of studies for the post office’s three murals he painted and other work by Ward was on display. Interviews include curator David Leopold, US Magistrate Judge for the District of New Jersey, the Honorable John J. Hughes, and Charles Ward’s daughters.
