Description
“Kay Walking Stick: An American Artist” is a career retrospective of Kay WalkingStick (b. 1935), a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and one of the world’s most celebrated artists of Native American ancestry. “Paint is mud and oil, really,” says the artist. “Yet they can be transformed into poetry. I love that.” Kay is especially known for her landscapes and diptychs.
Kay WalkingStick’s retrospective began at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, and is now in its final stop after a national tour at the Montclair Art Museum through June 17, 2018. State of the Arts visits Kay in her studio in Easton, Pennsylvania, where she lives with her husband, the artist Dirk Bach. We also meet the exhibition’s curator, Kathleen Ash-Milby of the National Museum of the American Indian, and Gail Stavitsky, Chief Curator at the Montclair Art Museum.
