George Segal in Black and White

A new book and exhibition focus on the great sculptor George Segal, in images made by his good friend and studio assistant, photographer Donald Lokuta. He met George Segal in 1984. The photographer began by taking a portrait of the sculptor—but soon he was assisting him in the studio.  It was the beginning of a friendship spanning 16 years, until George Segal’s death in 2000. During all this time, Donald Lokuta was taking pictures.

We meet Donald Lokuta, a professor of photography at Kean University. Interviews also include Rena Segal (George’s daughter) and curator Donna Gustafson.  George Segal in Black and White: Photographs by Donald Lokuta is at the Zimmerli Art Museum February 14-July 31, 2015. A book was published of the same name.
